Obbe Vermeij, a developer for Grand Theft Auto 4, has revealed that the 2008 game introduced a new way of entering cheat codes, utilizing the in-game phone to activate them. This departure from the series' long-standing tradition, which started with GTA 3 in 2001, marked a significant shift in the franchise.
In earlier titles like Vice City and San Andreas, cheat codes were activated by entering specific letter sequences on PC or pressing controller button combinations on consoles. However, in GTA 4, Rockstar Games broke this tradition by leveraging the in-game cellphone as a key feature. Instead of using traditional input methods, players needed to dial certain phone numbers on Niko Bellic's cellphone to activate cheat codes.

Obbe Vermeij, who was the technical director for GTA 4, explained on Twitter that this new approach was a natural fit because the cellphone was a major addition to the game. Vermeij stated that the developers were committed to using the cellphone in as many ways as possible, which led to the decision to have cheat codes activated through it. He also shared that because of this break from tradition, cheat codes in GTA 4 were "done by the level designers" rather than by Vermeij himself.
This change in how cheat codes were activated was part of a larger discussion Vermeij had about the GTA series, including a look back at how a "coding glitch" in GTA San Andreas led to multiple cheat codes being triggered unintentionally. One example was the famous "HESOYAM" code, which worked alongside the intended "INEEDSOMEHELP" cheat due to a technical issue with how the game stored cheat codes using "hash codes." By eliminating the need for letter sequences to trigger cheats, GTA 4 avoided this problem entirely.
Despite being released over 16 years ago, GTA 4 remains a highly regarded entry in the open-world action-adventure franchise. While rumors of a remaster have cooled, fans may still see Rockstar Games pursue such a project after completing work on the much-anticipated GTA 6, set for release in 2025.
