In recent years, Final Fantasy games have steadily reached players beyond the PlayStation ecosystem. Final Fantasy XV was ported to Xbox and PC, and Final Fantasy XVI launched on PC in September 2023. However, Final Fantasy VII Remake and its sequel, Rebirth, have yet to arrive on Xbox—a situation co-director Naoki Hamaguchi hopes to change.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi shared his desire to make the Final Fantasy VII Remake series available to a broader audience, highlighting the industry's shift toward multiplatform gaming. "I want to bring Final Fantasy VII and the Remake series to as many players as possible," he said. Although Hamaguchi has no direct control over platform decisions, he emphasized the importance of creating an environment where more players can experience these games.
Square Enix appears to be embracing this shift. Over the summer, Octopath Traveler 2 finally made its way to Xbox after initially launching on PlayStation, Switch, and PC. Hamaguchi believes this move reflects a broader industry trend.
"This goes beyond Final Fantasy VII," Hamaguchi explained. "The industry has evolved, with more platforms and environments for gaming. That’s likely why our CEO, Mr. [Takashi] Kiryu, has steered us toward multiplatform releases—it’s the direction the industry is headed."
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has also garnered critical acclaim, earning multiple nominations at The Game Awards 2024, including Game of the Year.
