Humanoid Origin, the game studio founded by Mass Effect veteran Casey Hudson, is closing its doors due to an "unexpected shortfall of funding." The studio announced the closure on LinkedIn, expressing heartbreak over not being able to release its highly anticipated sci-fi game. The team’s focus now is on helping its staff transition to new opportunities.
"In our time together, the team achieved incredible progress and showed that amazing work can be done in a culture of fun and creativity," the statement read. "We are grateful for their talent, courage, and friendship. Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout our journey."
Founded in 2021, Humanoid Origin was working on an ambitious AAA sci-fi IP described as "unlike anything else." Based in Canada, with offices in Edmonton and Kelowna and remote team members, the studio aimed to bring a fresh vision to the industry.
Casey Hudson, who led the studio, is best known for his 16-year tenure at BioWare, where he directed the Mass Effect series. After a brief stint at Xbox working on mixed-reality projects, he returned to BioWare in 2017 as general manager before leaving again in 2020 to establish Humanoid Origin. Hudson’s next steps remain unknown.
Meanwhile, BioWare recently launched Dragon Age: The Veilguard in October. With no plans for DLC or expansions, the studio is now focusing on the next Mass Effect installment, which is being developed by a team of series veterans—though Hudson is not involved.
